Previous results at the FIP Euro Cup
Great Britain's men beat Greece on Saturday to maintain their 100% record in the FIP Euro Padel Cup - and victory over Group C's bottom side Monaco on Sunday morning will seal their place in the Final 8.
GB followed up Friday's 3-0 win over Switzerland with another clean sweep against the Greeks at Padel G24 in Madrid, putting them top of the group and on the verge of qualification to the climatic phase of the tournament, which takes place later this year.
GB No.1 Christian Medina Murphy once again joined forces with Sam Jones and the top-order duo took care of Vasileios Sioulis and Pavlos-Louis Balafas 6-4, 6-3.
Louie Harris and Alex Loughlan were firing on all cylinders right from the off as they sealed the British win with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Dimitrios Chalavazis and Anastasios Mandalenakis in just 39 minutes.
Britain's third pairing, Tom Farquharson and Alfonso Patacho, found the going a bit harder against Eleftherios Theodorou and Jason Kostaridis. The first set went to a tiebreak in which the Brits lost the first four points. Although they battled back to parity, the momentum then swung back to Greece and they celebrated extravagantly after reeling off the final three points.
However, a break in the sixth game of set two earned GB a 4-2 lead which they did not relinquish. In the deciding set, they seized an early break and that proved enough to record a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Sandy Farquharson, GB men's co-captain, said, "That was a good game to get through against another emerging country that has some very good players that know how to fight well.
"Our players needed to keep their intensity high in order to get through it. The matches might look easier on the scoresheet, but we had to play well to get through that one."
GB women set for Swedish showdown
Great Britain's final Group A match against Sweden on Sunday morning will be a straight shootout to decide who qualifies for The Final 8 of the FIP Euro Padel Cup later this year.
GB made it two wins from two on Saturday morning as Libby Fletcher and Agustin Gomez Silingo's team beat Poland 2-1 to match Sweden's four points at the top of the group.
Britain's top-order pair of British No.1 Aimee Gibson and No.3 Tia Norton were once again in ruthless mode, dismissing Poland's Ada Górczyńska and Alina Robok 6-1, 6-0 in just 50 minutes - the same scoreline as in yesterday's victory over Austria.
New partnership Catherine Rose and Lisa Phillips dropped the first set but took a firm grip of the match therafter, losing just one further game en route to a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Zofia Piorkowska and Aleksandra Rosolska.
In the third tie, 25-year-old Laura Jackson was handed her GB debut and played alongside the returning Hanna Maddock. The new pairing went down 7-6, 6-3 to Joanna Nowakowska and Magdalena Kiszczyńska to give Poland a consolation win.
GB's decisive clash with Sweden will be a reunion after the two nations met in last year's group match at the European Championships in Sardinia. Sweden won 3-0 on that occasion, but two of the ties went to three sets.
GB co-captain Libby Fletcher said, "Sweden are the first or second strongest team here and they are expected to qualify, so we go into tomorrow's game as underdogs, which is a great position to be in.
"We can be nice and relaxed. We'll rest this afternoon and we'll be ready to get our revenge after our defeat to them last year."
On the victory over Poland, Fletcher reflected, "It was another very, very convincing display from Aimee and Tia in position one, then Lisa and Catherine had a really tough three-set match. Their opponents made a very strong start and made few mistakes, but our girls were mentally strong in the second and third sets.
"We were delighted to have Laura Jackson making her debut. She was very physical, motivated and pumped-up. Her and Hannah lost a very close first set which could've gone either way. We'll be ready to go again in the morning."
GB women open with comfortable victory
