Day three: GB's men and women march into the Final 8

Rose and Phillips win thrilling decider for GB women

Catherine Rose and Lisa Phillips won a nail-biting deciding tie to brilliantly seal a 2-1 victory over Sweden and secure Great Britain's women's passage into the Final 8 of the 2025 FIP Euro Padel Cup.

It had always looked likely that GB's fate would come down to their final Phase 2 group match — and after both they and Sweden had beaten Austria and Poland in the first two Group A encounters, the winner-takes-all climax came to pass.

GB's frontline pair, Aimee Gibson and Tia Norton continued their dominant form in the opening rubber, showing Smilla Borup Lundgren and Juni Sjoland no mercy with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Gibson and Norton dropped just six games all weekend.

Back came Sweden in the second tie though, 18-year-old Amanda Girdo and partner Linnea Björk beating GB's new pairing of Abigail Tordoff and Laura Jackson in rapid fashion 6-1, 6-0.

It all came down to GB No.2 Rose and world No.121 Phillips against Hanna Borjeson and Lisa Andersson, two players ranked just outside the world's top 500.

Rose and Phillips broke the Swedes' swerve three games into the first set and then again in the seventh to see it out 6-2.

With the men's match already finished and the whole squad roaring them on from behind the glass in the second set, the GB pair broke serve at 3-3 through a winning smash down the middle by Phillips. However, Sweden broke straight back after Rose hit a forehand volley just out on to the side glass. Back at 4-4, Sweden then held to love and the psychological momentum seemed to have swung back their way.

But Rose and Phillips held firm and took the second set to a tiebreak. In it, they got off to a sizzling start with an early mini break to build a 3-0 lead. It was 5-1 at the change of ends and they then took the next two points. The squad, coaches and British spectators were soon on the court dancing in celebration.

So, GB's women join the the other three group winners, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, in the Final 8 later this year, where they'll be joined by Spain, Italy, Portugal and France.

GB's men join the women in the Final 8

GB's men had virtually sealed their qualification for the Final 8 even before their third group match with Monaco began — but they made absolutely sure with another resounding clean sweep.

Sandy Farquharson and John Leach's side will take their place in the final phase of the tournament later this year (date and venue as-yet unknown) alongside the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany, and automatic qualifiers Spain, Italy, Portugal and France.

Britain's passage was sealed courtesy of yet another commanding performance by GB No.1 Christian Medina Murphy and partner Sam Jones, who thrashed Dario Maturi and Nicolas Fedoroff 6-0, 6-1.

That mathematically guaranteed Britain's progression, and Alex Loughlan and Louie Harris celebrated with another rock solid showing in dispatching Monaco's second pair Benjamin Chavanis and Eugenio Forchione 6-0, 6-1.

Jamie Lobo was given a GB debut in the third tie alongside Tom Farquharson and they saw off Florian Valsot and Arnaud Piacentile 6-3 6-4, sparking British celebrations at the G24 arena.
