Aimee Gibson wins back-to-back FIP titles

• 2 MINUTE READ

Just one week on from lifting the FIP Silver Reap Hong Kong title, British No.1 Aimee Gibson rallied to a fourth victory of the year in Crete alongside Spain’s Alba Perez Momha.

The top seeds were a dominant force once again at the FIP Bronze event in Crete. Having eased through to the semi-finals, the British, Spanish pair went on to overcome third seeds Patricia Araus Lopez and Carla Fito Fernandez 6-4, 6-2.

There, they fought back from dropping the second set against Monica Gomez Rivas and Claudia Escacena Montero to win 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 and capture their second title in as many weeks.

“I’m over the moon to claim back-to-back wins with Alba”, said Gibson. “We played a really good tournament with some very tough matches along the way, beating some really impressive pairs. In the final we played against two Spanish girls, the number two seeds. Monica is ranked around the top 70, and Claudia is a very good junior.

“We played solidly the whole tournament and came from Hong Kong with as much confidence as we could. We took it match by match, and we were able to play a really high level in the final even though it went to three sets. We played a strong match overall and in the third set we played a little bit better than them, and took a bit more risk, coming out on top.”

The victory in Crete marks the latest feat in what has been a standout year for the world No.84. She began the season by winning the FIP Silver Australian Open and FIP Silver Melbourne, has finished runner-up at events in Qatar and Manila, played a pivotal role in helping Great Britain qualify for the FIP Euro Padel Cup Final 8 has established herself inside the world’s top 100.

Now, after securing successive FIP titles at the business end of the season, Gibson has credited her coach, Alex Grillo for helping shape what has become a remarkable year for the 34-year-old.

“I’m so happy with the progress I have made in the last few months and want to thank and credit my coach Alex Grillo at Rocks Lane. I don’t have much time to spend with him, but he is always able to help me when I am back, even if it is just for a couple of days in between tournaments and it’s been really helping my game improve.”

At the beginning of December, Gibson will turn her attention to the LTA Padel National Championships which will take place from 4-7 December at Rocket Padel, Bristol, where she’ll team up with British No.2 Catherine Rose.

“I have one more FIP tournament to go next week in Bahrain, a FIP Bronze, with Alba again. I’m looking forward to playing the last international tournament of the year, before I compete in the LTA Padel National Championships with Catherine (Rose).

“I’m really looking forward to playing in Bristol and ending the season at home. Competing on home soil will be special, and it means a lot that my family and friends will be there to support me as I complete my 2025 season.”
